GameStop CEO Paul Raines has claimed PlayStation VR will release in the fall, despite Sony slating the head-mounted device to debut during the first half of 2016.

Appearing on Fox News (via VideoGamer) the Chief Executive noted that GameStop is in discussions for the consumer launch of Oculus Rift and Valve’s HTC Vive, before adding that Sony’s VR headset will arrive in the fall.

“We are right now preparing for the launches of the major VR products. We’re in discussions with Oculus, HTC, and Sony. It’s a big launch, we’re getting ready for it. We will launch the Sony product this fall and we are in discussions with the other two players.”

Sony is still to detail an official asking price for PlayStation VR, let alone a firm release date. Last we reported, the first half of 2016 appeared to be set in stone, where it was set to launch alongside Hello Games’ sprawling sci-fi title No Man’s Sky. And though GameStop’s report shouldn’t be taken as gospel, it does represent food for thought.

One way or the other, Raines believes PSVR boasts the strongest software library over its competitors. Projecting the market size, on the other hand, is something that’s become “really difficult” for the high-street retailer as the advent of virtual reality inches ever closer.

Do you foresee Sony launching PlayStation VR before June 2016? Or will they hold off until the second half of the year? Let us know, and stay tuned as we expect to learn much more during the Game Developers Conference on March 14.
