Going into Marvel’s Phase Three and in particular Captain America: Civil War, Chadwick Boseman’s Wakanda Prince is still something of an unknown quantity. When the threequel’s Super Bowl spot (which can be seen above) roared online, his Black Panther was seen falling in line with Team Iron Man – alongside Vision, Black Widow and War Machine – whereas recent set photos placed him opposite Falcon and Chris Evans’ Cap.
So where does his allegiance really lie? According to Boseman himself, there’s more nuance to the character that simply picking one side or the other.
[zerg]Word comes by way of Empire (via CBM), where the MCU newcomer revealed that his superhero will be on a mission when the curtain rises on Civil War.
“It’s my political mission to tame it and get it under control. T’Challa is a prince of Wakanda. All heroes have a weight on their shoulders, but there will eventually be a difference in what I have to carry politically and socially.”
Beyond that, his home region of Wakanda will play a pivotal role in the 2018 Black Panther film after underpinning the opening segments of last year’s Age of Ultron. Creating a fictional African nation is therefore high on Boseman’s calling card, and here he talks about the accent and attitude he’ll bring to the role.
“The idea of Wakanda is sort of, what if Timbuktu hasn’t been conquered? I basically listened to people and picked what sounded cool, since it’s not a specific place. It’s in the southern, central part of Africa. The attitude, the musicality, as is my preference of the character. It has to fit his dignity.”
