Grab those bows and sharpen those spears, Ubisoft has unleashed Far Cry Primal across PlayStation 4 and Xbox One today, and much like other tentpole releases, it comes packing a day-one update.

There is, as expected, the standard array of bug fixes and gameplay tweaks, but the mandatory patch also heralds Expert Mode, a difficulty level that is all about putting the player through their paces. Not only will it introduce smarter AI, but it’ll dramatically reduce Takkar’s health, paving the way for a much more tense survival experience.

Here’s the update details in full, per Ubisoft:

  • Players’ health has been halved compared to Hard difficulty.
  • Reduced players aim assist.
  • AI shoots faster by 1/3.
  • Enemies in combat are not shown on mini map by default (they appear only if they are tagged).
  • It takes the AI a longer time to “forget” you when you hide.
  • The aim assist box is reduced for several weapon types (bow, club, spear).
  • The player damage is reduced.

Our own Chad Goodmurphy ran riot in Ubisoft’s prehistoric landscape and found Ubisoft’s title to be both beautiful and packed to the brim with things to do. Even if the core story fuelling the action on screen leaves much to be desired.

Far Cry Primal is available from today, February 23, on consoles. PC owners can expect the primordial spinoff to make the jump on March 1.
