Dimension Television, one of the earlier advocates of the recent movies-to-TV phenomenon, is finally beginning to make headway with its seralized spin on Stephen King’s dark and brooding novella, The Mist.

News of the adaptation first came to light in September of 2015, and today Spike has ordered a pilot episode of the budding new series, which is to be penned by Christian Torpe. Citing book King’s source material and Frank Darabont’s 2007 feature film as inspiration, The Mist will revolve around a strange fog rolling down from the mountains and engulfing a small town.

What follows is a series of eerie and supernatural events, and while a government experiment gone awry is considered the root cause, the beauty of King’s jet-black thriller is that it largely focuses on its core cast of characters and how they react to the chaos around them.

Bob Weinstein, co-chairman The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films, released the following statement in anticipation of The Mist firing up production.

“We are excited to be in business with Spike on their first scripted production pilot and working with the very talented Christian Torpe to further explore Stephen King’s classic novella and bring this riveting series to television audiences. The terror and drama in Stephen King’s novella are so vast that we felt serialized television is the best place to explore them in greater depth. With this show, Christian has created a fascinating band of characters and a story with infinite scares.”

It’s got Dimension’s backing, King’s blessing and now a pilot order from Spike, and we can readily expect more information to emerge as The Mist preps for its TV debut in late 2016.
