J.J. Abrams Teases Ideas For More “Blood Relatives” Beyond 10 Cloverfield Lane

Cloaked in a veil of secrecy so thick that the first teaser arrived bearing no name, Matt Reeves' 2008 creature feature Cloverfield carved out a niche audience with smart filmmaking and a wonderful sense of mystery - just where did big ol' Clover come from? - and though it's not strictly speaking a full sequel, 10 Cloverfield Lane is teetering on the edge of its theatrical release.

Described as a “blood relative” by producer J.J. Abrams, it’s becoming more and more clear that Dan Trachtenberg’s continuation is one capsule story taken from a rich well of potential. But could there be room for further films beyond 10 Cloverfield Lane? It certainly appears so.

When quizzed about the nature of the film in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Abrams dropped hints of another project, potentially a third film in the Cloverfield ‘universe’ that would “connect some stories.”

“I think [categorizing them] would be presumptuous, because we’re talking about this movie and comparing it to Cloverfield, but I would be lying if I didn’t say there was something else that, if we’re lucky enough to do it, could be really cool that connects some stories. This is just this movie, and it’s only two films that we’re talking about right now. There is something else that we’d like to do, and hopefully we’ll get a shot.”

Monsters come in all forms, and we’ll see at least one variation of that formula when 10 Cloverfield Lane arrives in theaters on March 11. John Goodman, John Gallagher Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Winstead star in Trachtenberg’s subterranean thriller.
