As Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to do solid business more than two months after opening to record-breaking numbers in December, Lucasfilm and Disney’s next trip to the galaxy far, far away has been kept surprisingly under wraps. Outside of some news about cast members and screenwriters, not all that much has come out about Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the Gareth Edwards-directed spinoff set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
And yet, despite that secrecy, production on Rogue One is continuing to ramp up, and today brings an unconventional look at the supposed logo for the anticipated pic – via pictures of tote bags given to the cast and crew that have popped up on eBay. Unless you’re a truly committed collector of Star Wars swag, the £285 price tag may prove a deterrent, but the items nonetheless provide a sneak peek at logos related to the likely blockbuster.
One canvas tote bag features a new design of the Alliance’s Starbird symbol, a recognizable insignia in the Star Wars universe adopted by rebel forces fighting the evil Empire. An inscription in Aurebesh (a fictional universe in the Star Wars canon) apparently translates to “Go Rogue,” though how that was translated and by whom is a deeply interesting question for those less familiar with the franchise’s extensive mythology.
A black duffel bag was also up for grabs on eBay, bearing the already-released symbol for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (the official name of the movie that no one expects to stick).
Rogue One stars Felicity Jones, an Oscar nominee for Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything, as a rebel fighter who embarks on a dangerous mission to steal the blueprints for the first Death Star out from under the Empire’s nose. Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Riz Ahmed, Donnie Yen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Jonathan Aris, and Alan Tudyk all also have key roles in the pic, which opens Dec. 16 this year.
