Despite the huge success that the Merc with a Mouth is experiencing right now, it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting that Deadpool/X-Men crossover anytime soon, unfortunately.

While speaking to The Playlist in a recent interview, the film’s writers (Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese) said that the character is now his own “brand and franchise” and while he may eventually meet up with the rest of the mutants, it won’t happen for a while.

“Deadpool’s now become a brand and franchise unto himself, independent of the X-Men, and that’s great. That gives the studio two franchises in one, but I think it is its own franchise, and you’ll see synergy between those two properties, but they’re two very distinct brands.” says co-writer Paul Wernick.

There’s also another issue with a possible crossover between the two properties: they’re currently in different timelines:

“The X-Men series is currently set in the 1980s [while] Deadpool is set three decades later in our present day,” said Reese. “It’s a timeline that will eventually catch up though, I would imagine.”

Both points that are brought up here make a lot of sense, and while a crossover between Deadpool and X-Men would obviously be incredible to see, it’s probably best that the Merc with a Mouth does his own thing for a while.

It’s important to remember that while comic book fans know Wade Wilson quite well, he’s still a pretty new character for the vast majority of moviegoers, and people are just starting to get familiar with him. It’d be smart to build him up a bit more and flesh out his world and story with a sequel or two before throwing him in with the other mutants.

We have no doubt that a crossover will eventually materialize somewhere down the road, but right now isn’t a good time to do it. The right move is to give him a bit more breathing room and a couple of sequels and then re-visit the idea. At least, that’s what we think.

What are your thoughts, though? Do you want to see a crossover between Deadpool and X-Men right now, or would you rather 20th Century Fox wait a bit and give their anti-hero some more time to grow? Sound off below and let us know!
