Between them, Duncan Jones’ Warcraft: The Beginning and Ubisoft’s live-action Assassin’s Creed feature are shouldering the burden of expectation when it comes to 2016’s video game adaptations, and in particular whether they can break the mould. But there’s another project emerging from the other end of the games-to-movies spectrum, and that is Sony’s animated Angry Birds movie.
Transforming Rovio’s flightless avians into a big-screen feature, today brings forth an all-new trailer ahead of the film’s arrival in May. Welcoming moviegoers to Bird Island, the snippet introduces us to the village idiots: Red (Jason Sudeikis), Chuck (Frozen star Josh Gad) and the temperamental Bomb (Danny McBride). Bringing an end to that tranquility are the conniving green piggies, who make shore on Bird Island and immediatley win over the majority of the population, but Red, Chuck and Bomb aren’t convinced.
Played to Foreigner’s “Hot Blooded,” Sony’s latest peek at the Angry Birds movie is something of a mixed bag, with some genuinely rib-tickling moments blighted by toilet humor and the ol’ save-the-world plot. Even still, a bright and breezy story coupled with an eye-catching aesthetic ought to serve as good compliments for the film’s core cast, one which is rounded out by Bill Hader, Kate McKinnon, Maya Rudolph, Keegan-Michael Key and Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage.
Angry Birds will soar into theaters on May 13 and May 20 in the United Kingdom and North America, respectively.
The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – or almost entirely. In this paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis, We’re the Millers, Horrible Bosses), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad in his first animated role since Frozen), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride, This is the End, Eastbound and Down) have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.
