A tide of paranormal activity set to plague New York City is headed into theaters this summer – and we’re not talking about that found footage franchise. This year marks the return of the ghoul exterminators in the shape of Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot. Last week brought a sneak peek trailer announcement, suspiciously absent of actual footage, and today Sony Pictures has dropped the first full-length preview.
Bringing the franchise into the modern day, Feig’s plan to reimagine a whole new take on the ‘busters saw him cast four new actors to tackle the leading roles. Gone are Venkman, Spengler, Stantz and Zeddemore, and in their place? Kristen Wiig’s Erin Gilbert, Melissa McCarthy’s Abby Yates, Kate McKinnon’s Jillian Holtzmann and Leslie Jones’ Patty Tolan.
With only a few months until the movie hits theaters, it’s amazing how little we know about the plot thus far. Thankfully, today’s trailer sheds a little more light on what the new line-up will face in their maiden adventure.
“Someone is creating a device that amplifies paranormal activity,” Wiig’s particle physicist Erin Gilbert reveals in the voiceover, signaling a new era for the world of ghost-huntin’ as the team attempt to tackle whatever – or whoever – it is that’s hounding the city.
Of course, there’s plenty of throwbacks to the original franchise glimpsed fleetingly here. The first shot has three of the gang squaring off with a levitating spectre who seems nice enough. That is, until her face contorts and she coats Wiig’s character in a stream of ectoplasm. Remind you of that ghoulish librarian from the first flick?
Prepare to be spooked when Ghostbusters lands in theaters on July 15.
