Sony‘s responded, in part, to the news earlier this week that the Xbox One now fully-supports cross-platform play, but stopped short of specifically mentioning the possibility of a marriage between Microsoft’s Xbox Live service, and Sony’s own PlayStation Network.

In a statement issued to GameSpot yesterday, a spokesperson said:

PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002. We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play.

The reply was released in response to a direct question inquiring about the possibility of a partnership between themselves and Microsoft, says GameSpot, leading to doubt over whether the Japanese company are for or against a potential pairing.

Following the news that the Xbox One now supports cross-platform play with platforms other than PC, Rocket League developer Psyonix confirmed that their game would be the first to allow PC and Xbox to game together – something that’s been possible on PlayStation 4 since it first released.

Perhaps such a deal is already in the works and Sony‘s opting to keep quiet about a future world where Xbox and PlayStation owners can play against each other, or the opposite, and it’s all just a bunch of rhetoric that will never amount to anything. Hopefully, it’s the former that turns out to be true.
