If 2013’s Man of Steel laid the foundations, then this week’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is the defining second step in Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe, kicking off a slate of superhero flicks that spans all the way into 2020.
Among that roster of future films is Aquaman, James Wan’s standalone feature that will introduce Game of Thrones alum Jason Momoa as the King of the Seven. Speaking broadly about Warner’s nascent universe, DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns spoke to ComicBook.com about that future slate, before expressing his own excitement about the Aquaman spinoff.
Given that Johns was heavily involved in a new run of the Aquaman comics that began life in 2011, it’s fair to say that the DC executive knows a thing or two about one Arthur Curry. Here, he heaps praise on the character – “he’s got so much depth to him, no pun intended.”
“It’s massive [seeing Aquaman on the big screen]. Jason [Momoa] and I were talking about Aquaman and I love that people underestimate the character. I feel like hopefully we’ll be able to share the love that we have as readers of the character because the jokes about him are fun, but he’s got so much depth to him, no pun intended. It’s really great to see him finally on the big screen.”
Before James Wan was appointed at the helm, it was Midnight Special director Jeff Nichols that took a pass at Aquaman, though he ultimately backed out of Warner and DC’s tentpole. Wan’s rendition of the King of the Seven has plotted course to dock in theaters on July 27, 2018. Amber Heard also stars as Mera, Queen of Atlantis.
