A couple of weeks ago it was reported that Zendaya Coleman had landed a main role in Marvel’s solo Spider-Man reboot, and now the actress/singer has confirmed as much during an appearance on The Ellen Show.
Obviously Zendaya is still sworn to secrecy, so aside from stating that she’s definitely going to be in the film we don’t get too much more out of her. Still, she does also express her excitement and talks about how hard it was for her to “break down those walls” and finally begin to land acting gigs.
“I can’t say anything else other than I’m going to be in it. I have no idea [when filming begins]. I don’t even know that to be completely honest.
It’s very exciting. When it comes to the acting space, I’m basically unknown. I’ve never been in a real movie before or anything like that, so I had to start from the bottom like anyone else. I auditioned and auditioned and auditioned and [broke] down those walls because a lot of people do have that pre-conceived notion of who I am based off previous things I’ve done, so you got to really break that down and go hard, put in the work, take all the meetings, take all the auditions.
The initial report stated that Zendaya would be playing a character named Michelle, and many fans believe this will turn out to be lesser-known Peter Parker roommate/love interest from the comics, Michelle Gonzales.
Whoever she turns out to be, Zendaya joins Tom Holland as Spidey/Parker and Marisa Tomei as his Aunt May. The Jon Watts-directed Spider-Man reboot will be with us on July 7, 2017.
