Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon fire up their trusty proton packs in today’s all-new and electrifying image for Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot.

Arriving by way of Empire, the action shot is as much a call to arms as anything else, with Feig’s ass-kicking quartet crashing a rock concert to tackle an unseen supernatural menace.

Part and parcel of the outlet’s coverage also had the filmmaker explain the action tendencies underpinning his Ghostbusters overhaul. Honing his style after directing Melissa McCarthy in Spy, Feig stated simply that he “wanted [his] ladies to be badass.

“I wanted them to get in over their heads and fight ghosts. I like the idea of them having to enter a giant setting and take on ghosts. I like action movies,” he tells us. “I got to play with that in Spy, and it felt very natural here. It makes it fun and very unexpected for people when they hear it’s four lady Ghostbusters. It may be quite different than what they think.”

Tackling a winged demon halfway through a rock concert is certainly a good place to start when it comes to ensuring the film’s leading ladies go down as four badasses. But will the core plot live up to the bubbling chemistry – no pun intended – between its leads? We’ll find out in a few months’ time.

Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters will face New York’s supernatural nasties head on when McCarthy, Wiig, Jones and McKinnon don the famous proton packs on July 15. To sate your ghostly appetite, you can check out the recent international trailer, which showcased much more of Chris Hemwsworth’s secretary, Kevin.
