Esteemed composer and all-round musical maestro Hans Zimmer has formally announced plans to retire from the superhero genre, ensuring Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice will go down as his final foray into the realm of costumed heroes and spandex.
News arrives by way of BBC, where the German composer and producer stated simply that he has “officially retired from the superhero business.” Zimmer’s decorated work in the genre stretches back to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, before joining his good luck charm on 2013’s Man of Steel, where Nolan served as producer and creative advisor for Warner Bros.
From there, Zimmer transitioned to work on Dawn of Justice under Junkie XL, though given that Batman V Superman‘s score proved “very hard” for the maestro to wrestle with, Zimmer believes now is a good time to call it quits in the superhero scene. Said he: “[‘Batman v Superman’] was very hard for me to do, to try to find new language. I did ‘Batman Begins’ with Chris 12 years ago, so ‘The Dark Knight’ trilogy might be three movies to you; to me it was 11 years of my life.”
Throughout his glittering career, Zimmer has also coached the likes of John Powell (Universal’s Bourne series), Harry Gregson-Williams (Metal Gear Solid, The Martian) and Lorne Balfe (Terminator Genisys).
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is currently in theaters. With the superhero scene now firmly behind him, next up for Hans Zimmer will be reuniting with old cohort Christopher Nolan for 2017 wartime drama Dunkirk.
