All of the Rangers are in place, Pitch Perfect director and star Elizabeth Banks has been cast as Rita Repulsa, and Dean Israelite’s live-action reboot has its crosshairs placed on a March 24, 2017 release window.

Yes, barring a slight delay to production, Lionsgate’s Power Rangers movie has hit the ground running, recruiting RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Naomi Scott and Dacre Montgomery as the titular teens. Fast forward to now and The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that David Denman (13 Hours, The Gift) has been added to the burgeoning cast as Sam Scott, father to Jason Scott AKA the Red Ranger.

Not much is known about the extent of Denman’s role in Power Rangers, other than the fact that he will spend a fair chunk of screentime butting heads with his son over a potential career football. But there are bigger matters at hand – extra-terrestrial ones, to be exact.

Much of the villany will stem from Banks’ all-powerful alien, Rita Repulsa, an evil sorceress capable of blazing through the entire solar system hellbent on galactic domination. Behind the scenes, Saban Films’ Haim Saban, Brian Casentini and Allison Shearmur are attached to produce, while Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama of The Last Witch Hunter fame penned the most recent draft of the screenplay.

Dean Israelite will launch Power Rangers onto the big screen in time for March 24, 2017.
