From the corridors of Washington D.C. to the grimy, neon-drenched streets of an apocalyptic Los Angeles, House of Cards stalwart Robin Wright has boarded Denis Villeneuve’s long-in-development sequel Blade Runner 2.

Warner Bros. made the announcement via press release earlier today, though they didn’t disclose the role Wright will be assuming. All we know for sure at this early stage is that the 2018 feature will take place “several decades after the 1982 original, with Harrison Ford reprising his iconic role as Rick Deckard.”

Also bound for Warner’s dystopian future is Ryan Gosling, but details on his role are just as scarce – if not more so – than Wright’s character. Behind the lens, Villeneuve is coming off the back of Prisoners and Sicario, and is poised to re-team with esteemed director of photography Roger Deakins for the sequel.

And though he may not be directing, Ridley Scott will oversee progress on Blade Runner 2 as producer, with a script coming by way of Hampton Fancher – co-writer on the original – and Michael Green.

Here’s an extract from the press release announcing Wright’s casting:

“The film is set several decades after the 1982 original, with Harrison Ford reprising his iconic role as Rick Deckard. The film is written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, and succeeds the initial story by Fancher and David Peoples based on Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Story details, as well as Wright’s character, are not being revealed.”

Blade Runner 2 will make a beeline for theaters on January 12, 2018. With Wright’s place in the ensemble all but signed, sealed and delivered, principal photography for Villeneuve’s follow-up is due to begin in July of this year. As for Wright, the actress will return as Claire Underwood for Netflix’s House of Cards season 5, not to mention joining fellow Amazonian warriors in Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman film.
