Deadpool is currently North America’s highest grossing movie of 2016, a result which no one would have predicted before its release back in February. It was during that month when the Brewvies Cinema Pub in Salt Lake City, Utah, served alcohol during a screening of the critically acclaimed R-Rated Marvel Comics adaptation. No big deal, right?
Well, since then, the theater has made headlines following the news that they’ve been cited for breaking the state’s obscenity law by serving said alcohol during the film. As a result, they now face fines of up to $25,000. Part of the reason this story has gained so much traction though is because the alcohol was served in the presence of nudity, simulated sex, and a cartoon unicorn doing some obscene things during the credits.
The whole thing seems pretty ridiculous and archaic, something Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds acknowledged when he Tweeted a link to the story this weekend, stating: “Thank god, they’ve found a way to legislate fun.” Clearly not happy about the situation, it has now been revealed by the Associated Press that the actor has donated $5000 to the theater to help the pay their legal fees.
The case goes to court this May, and the entire situation is sure to continue making waves and should bring Deadpool even more attention ahead of its upcoming DVD and Blu-ray release.
