My Little Pony Trots To New Release Date; Michael Pena, Uzo Aduba Circling Roles

Lionsgate has reshuffled its release slate today, nailing down new due dates for Woody Allen’s Cafe Society and the upcoming My Little Pony movie.

Set for limited release on July 15, Allen’s latest – one that stars Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart – will then expand on July 22 before going nationwide the following week, July 29. My Little Pony, on the other hand, has placed the crosshairs on an October 6, 2017 release, when it’ll open against Warner Bros. and Alcon Entertainment’s long-gestating sequel, Blade Runner 2.

With Edge of Tomorrow star Emily Blunt and Kristin Chenoweth already bound for Equestria, The Hollywood Reporter brings word today that Michael Pena (End of Watch, Ant-Man) and Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black) have opened talks to step into the voice booth. There, they’ll be joined by Tara Strong, Ashleigh Ball, Andrea Libman, Shannon Chan-Kent and Tabitha St. Germain who are set to move over from the original TV series to work on Lionsgate’s feature.

Indeed, there’s plenty of Ponyville regulars attached to the studio’s animation, including director Jayson Thiessen and screenwriter Meghan McCarthy, a regular fixture of the franchise having worked on the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic animated series.

Details are still thin on the ground when it comes to story, but early reports have stipulated some mysterious dark force casts a shadow over the lush hills of Equestria, forcing Twilight Sparkle and her four-legged companions into action in order to fend off any evil.

In light of today’s switcheroo, My Little Pony will go toe-to-toe with Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2 on October 6, 2017.
