Captain America: Civil War Directors Tease Possibility Of LGBT Characters In Future Marvel Movies

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is already pretty diverse, and it's clear that the studio is making an even greater effort to ensure that's a big part of Phase 3 with movies for characters like Black Panther and Captain Marvel. However, one thing none of their releases have as of right now are gay heroes, villains, or supporting characters.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is already pretty diverse, and it’s clear that the studio is making an even greater effort to ensure that’s a big part of Phase 3 with movies for characters like Black Panther and Captain Marvel. However, one thing none of their releases have as of right now are gay heroes, villains, or supporting characters.

Talking in a recent interview to promote the release of Captain America: Civil War, directors Joe and Anthony Russo weighed in on the possibility of adding gay characters to Marvel’s upcoming movies, and it definitely sounds like it’s something the studio is mulling over based on comments from the latter.

“I think this is a philosophy of Marvel, in success it becomes easier to take risks. There’s a lot of unconventional ideas in Civil War in terms of what people’s expectations of a superhero movie are, but I think we were able to do that because Winter Soldier worked.”

Joe went on to add that “the chances are strong” of an LGBT character joining the MCU after Captain America: Civil War, pointing out that “it’s important on all fronts” to push for diversity so that “storytelling becomes more interesting, more rich, and more truthful.”

With Captain America: Civil War looking set to be another huge hit for Marvel, the studio doing some very different things in their films moving forward is pretty much a guarantee. With that in mind, it will be interesting to see whether it’s a newly created or existing character from the comic books they decide to introduce in this way.
