Arguably the one Marvel solo movie that attracts a wave of feverish interest each time it flirts with the green light, Joe and Anthony Russo have weighed in on the possibility of a standalone Black Widow feature, and why they consider the prospect of a Scarlett Johansson-led spinoff to be a “no-brainer.”

As self-confessed fans of Johansson’s enigmatic Natasha Romanoff, the co-directors even emerged as frontrunners to helm an offshoot based on the former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent not long ago, but talks petered out in anticipation of Civil War. How and ever, with a North American release right around the corner, the topic of Black Widow popped up in conversation during an interview with Collider, where the directors once again expressed their interest in the character.

Though they didn’t confirm anything official, Joe Russo did note that it’s more a question of where a Black Widow solo movie will fit into the MCU slate than anything else. After all, fans got a taste of Romanoff’s harrowing upbringing in The Winter Soldier, leading us to believe that a spinoff has, at the very least, been brought up in conversation at Marvel.

Per Collider:

Anthony: It’s a no-brainer, right?

Joe: I don’t think [it’ll take] much. I think it’s just a function of where on the slate it goes. She’s a bad-ass.

Lining up on Team Iron Man, Johansson is joined on the Civil War casting docket by Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Anthony Mackie, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd and Tom Holland as Spidey.

Captain America: Civil War is now on the verge of its NA bow, with Marvel’s event film due to drop on May 6. To prep for the grand ensemble piece, you can consult our review.

As for the alleged Black Widow movie, do you think it will occupy one of Marvel’s three release slots for 2020?
