Black Widow Movie All But Confirmed As Kevin Feige Says Marvel Is “Committing” To Spinoff

For all intents and purposes, a Black Widow solo movie has evolved into something of a no-brainer over the course of Marvel's Phase Two. That's an arc that Joe and Anthony Russo - directors on Captain America: Civil War - drew attention to earlier this week, championing Scarlett Johansson's former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent as the near-perfect candidate to topline a new spinoff movie under the MCU umbrella.

For all intents and purposes, a Black Widow solo movie has evolved into something of a no-brainer over the course of Marvel’s Phase Two. That’s an arc that Joe and Anthony Russo – directors on Captain America: Civil War – drew attention to earlier this week, championing Scarlett Johansson’s former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent as the near-perfect candidate to topline a new spinoff movie under the MCU umbrella.

One caveat to those long-anticipated plans is where in Marvel’s slate said standalone movie would slot into. As things stand, the studio is all booked up through until 2020, when three as-yet-untitled movies will drop throughout the year. Could a Black Widow film occupy one of those dates?

Who knows. For now, at least, fans can take solace in the fact that Marvel is now – finally – lobbying for a spinoff revolving around one Natasha Romanoff, with Kevin Feige revealing to Deadline that the studio is fully committed to engineering a Johansson-led offshoot.

“The one creatively and emotionally we are most committing to doing is Black Widow,” Feige told Deadline. “We think she’s an amazing character. She’s a lead Avenger and has amazing stories in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a stand-alone franchise.”

Scarlett Johansson returns to the fray in Captain America: Civil War, which made its North American bow today, May 6, to rave reviews. Black Widow, meanwhile, looks set to finally leap off Marvel’s back-burner – and we couldn’t be more excited.
