With early reviews for X-Men: Apocalypse proving to be mixed, it’s going to be interesting to see how much of an impact the critics have on the movie’s box office when it’s released later this month.
Some believe Fox were smart to lift the embargo so soon, especially after Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice opened just days after a flood of bad press hit the web. Of course, that didn’t really hurt its opening weekend all that much; it was the bad word of mouth that followed which ended up affecting it.
Either way, Fox won’t want to follow X-Men: Days of Future Past – the highest grossing instalment in the franchise to date – with a bomb. Apocalypse will likely still perform well, but if it ends up disappointing in the end, how about throwing Deadpool (the star of Fox’s highest grossing comic book adaptation ever) into the mix to get people to return to the world of the X-Men?
Talking in an interview to promote X-Men: Apocalypse over the weekend, director Bryan Singer shared his thoughts on what would need to happen to make that a reality.
“If you take a character as irreverent and meta as Deadpool and connect him to something as grounded and serious as X-Men, you have to do it carefully and gently. When you drop them all in together it can be a disaster. That has to be done delicately, but there’s plenty of room to do it.”
That makes sense, but it’s hard to imagine the studio caring all that much about the finer details if they’re under the belief that a Deadpool/X-Men crossover could help them crack $1 billion. Whether or not this will ever happens remains to be seen, but many fans are already campaigning for Deadpool director Tim Miller to make the leap into the world of the X-Men – so who knows? It’s not that far outside the realm of possibility.
