Chronicle: RuneScape Legends – the competitive card game based on the award-winning RuneScape MMO, will leave open beta and launch in full on May 26, developer Jagex has announced. Not just a traditional card game in the same vein as Blizzard’s Hearthstone, Chronicle tasks players with playing cards that bestow buffs on their ‘Hero,’ which are encountered as they progress across the story book-inspired board.

Your goal is to either defeat your opponent through use of debuff and damage cards, or, if you fail to do so, go head-to-head with them in a final showdown in order to decide a victor.

Having been in closed and open beta for several months, Chronicle will appear on Steam in its final form in three weeks’ time. A statement by the game’s lead designer James Sweatman on the official website reads:

It’s just two weeks until we officially throw open the doors to Chronicle’s Hall of Legends on 26th May, and its launch on Steam is only the beginning for what we have planned. We’ve already introduced brand new cards every week, increased rewards, balancing improvements, and there’s even more content planned for the months to come.

As an added bonus for existing beta and early bird players, if you sign up before release, you’ll receive three free card parks come launch day.

We’d like to thank the many tens of thousands of cunning card tacticians who have helped us in open beta with feedback to refine the Chronicle’s unique CCG gameplay mechanics. For our existing open beta players, and anyone who signs up over the weekend, we’re offering up three free card packs so they can build their decks ready to take on new rivals at launch.

Having received an open beta code myself through application, I’m cautiously optimistic that Chronicle: RuneScape Legends has the potential to be hugely popular. It may not be the traditional CCG formula many expected, but it’s worth a look for that very reason.

Look out for our review closer to release.
