While I think we can all agree that Jennifer Lawrence is awesome, there are many fans who aren’t too happy with the fact that Mystique has become such a big part of the X-Men franchise. Portrayed as a villain in the original trilogy, she’s taken on a far more heroic role as time has passed despite the end of X-Men: First Class teasing her transformation into a bad guy.
In fact, when X-Men: Apocalypse starts, Raven has become a full on mutant icon after saving President Nixon during the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past, and now serves as a freedom fighter of sorts looking out for those being discriminated against or used in some way (hence why she saves Nightcrawler from that mutant fight club).
[zergpaid]This new featurette sheds some more light on that, revealing that Mystique has actually become something of a messianic, mythical hero to mutantkind in X-Men: Apocalypse. That’s a pretty massive departure from the comic books and something which is sure to further upset fans who don’t like seeing the character take on this sort of role.
However, there’s no denying that this is a pretty interesting direction to take things in, and with the trailers spoiling the fact that she ends up leading the team in X-Men: Apocalypse, hopefully Bryan Singer can make it work.
