Despite a somewhat shaky start, Fargo has been one of the most consistently entertaining shows over its past two seasons, and it’s about to get better. Ewan McGregor has signed on to lead the cast into Season 3, making his regular series TV debut in the dual (!) roles of brothers Emmit and Ray Stussy. That’s right: McGregor will be playing brothers on Fargo.

According to EW, McGregor will be playing the Stussy brothers (they’re not twins), who will together lead the third season of the popular FX series. Emmit Stussy, the Parking Lot King of Minnesota, is described as “a handsome, self-made, real estate mogul and family man, Emmit sees himself as an American success story.” His younger brother Ray, a parole officer, does not fare quite so well. He’s “the kind of guy who peaked in high school” and blames his brother for all his woes. I can already see the places that this plot can take us.

The third season of Fargo will open in 2010, a few years after the events of the first season, moving it far ahead of the second season’s 1970s setting. With Ewan McGregor in the lead, it will hopefully continue to do its own, progressively more interesting thing without relying too heavily on the previous seasons or the original Coen Brothers film. With the Stussy brothers as the central plot, and given McGregor’s calibre as an actor, we can not only hope for but expect the best.

Filming on Season 3 begins later this year, which means that we’re not going to see the next season of Fargo until 2017. But that’s OK: we have Ewan McGregor to look forward to.

Just as long as Fargo continues its upward trajectory of television excellence, there’s really no way that it can go wrong. Right?
