Captain America: Civil War Is Now 2016’s Biggest Movie In North America; Spider-Man TV Spot Released

Deadpool exceeded everyone's expectations back in February, and it's fair to say that no one could have ever guessed that the R-Rated movie would go on to become North America's highest grossing movie in 2016 with an impressive $362.7 million haul. In fact, at one point, it looked like it may even top Captain America: Civil War.

However, with moviegoers shying away from Alice Through the Looking Glass and X-Men: Apocalypse this weekend, Cap’s third solo flick has earned another $19.5 million, bringing its total cume domestically up to $372.7 million.

With $730.7 million overseas, Captain America: Civil War has now earned a total of $1.108 billion worldwide, and that makes it the fourth highest grossing superhero movie of all-time behind only The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Iron Man 3. Chances are that the Marvel Studios release will remain on top until this December too, when Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is released.

Warcraft will likely be a flop, and while it’s too soon to say how the likes of Ghostbusters, Independence Day: Resurgence, and Star Trek Beyond will perform, if things continue going the way they are, 2016 could end up being a bad one for the movie business, with only Marvel Studios and a handful of others seemingly safe from blockbuster fatigue.

Still, things have gone well for Captain America: Civil War and it should be interesting to see how Suicide Squad and Doctor Strange do in comparison.
