Suicide Squad Prequel Comic Delves Into The Joker and Harley Quinn’s Past

Suicide Squad opens in two months, meaning we're right in the thick of Warner Bros' marketing blitz. Trailers, TV spots and posters are the first stepping stone when it comes to audience awareness, but to really make an impression, you've got to grab people through different content channels. Suicide Squad opens in two months, meaning we’re right in the thick of Warner Bros’ marketing blitz. Trailers, TV spots and posters are the first stepping stone when it comes to audience awareness. But if you really want to make an impression? You’ve got to grab people through different content channels. Seeing as Warner’s supervillain team-up movie is based on a comic, this latest piece of promotion is served up…. as a mini-comic.

Written by Tony Bedard and drawn by Tom Derenick, it’s actually being offered as a freebie. It’s part of a marketing campaign between Warner and SPLAT hair dye, which might explain the title “Suicide Blonde.” The comic revolves around The Joker and Harley Quinn’s past, told from Quinn’s perspective, and follows the pair as they cause loads of mayhem.

Interestingly, it’s the depiction of the pair that might give you a reason to check it out. The Joker in particular isn’t quite the unhinged psychopath the film promises him to be in the shape of Jared Leto’s Clown Prince of Crime. Instead, he comes across as more of a tough guy gangster.

Prequel comics are becoming quite commonplace nowadays, and it’s not hard to see why. Studios get to amp up coverage and fans get to discover additional morsels and tidbits about characters months before the movie opens. In short, everybody wins.

If you’re looking to get a leg up on the film, you can check out the madcap Suicide Squad comic in all its glory right here.
