It was the one box office milestone that ultimately eluded Star Wars: The Force Awakens – that is, Avatar‘s groundbreaking $2.7 billion worldwide haul. But J.J. Abrams’ franchise revival got the better of Cameron’s seemingly immovable blockbuster on home turf.

Indeed, The Force Awakens surpassed Avatar’s $760,507,625 tally some months ago, but now that Disney’s barnstorming juggernaut has officially concluded its theatrical run in the States – almost a full six months after making its bow – its place at the tip-top of the domestic box office standings is a lock.

Across its run, Star Wars: The Force Awakens pulled in a grand total of $936,662,225, contributing to a worldwide total of just over $2 billion. For the sake of perspective, here’s a rundown of the top ten highest-grossing movies at the domestic box office.

1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $936,662,225
2. Avatar – $760,507,625
3.Titanic – $658,672,302
4. Jurassic World – $652,270,625
5. Marvel’s The Avengers – $623,357,910
6. The Dark Knight – $534,858,444
7. Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace – $474,544,677
8. Star Wars – $460,998,007
9. Avengers: Age of Ultron – $459,005,868
10. The Dark Knight Rises – $448,139,099

Even without toppling Avatar‘s worldwide record, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has cemented its status as a bona fide success story, resurrecting Lucasfilm’s dormant franchise with true flair. Indeed, such success has evidently had a resounding effect on Disney’s budding Star Wars universe, now that it’s been revealed the company’s top brass have ordered reshoots of Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in order to bring the militaristic offshoot in line with that signature sense of adventure associated with the franchise.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is available now on home video. Rogue One, meanwhile, is on course to hit theaters on December 16.
