Community star and rapper Donald Glover (AKA Childish Gambino) is on the verge of closing a deal to join Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, according to Deadline.
Glover, who was reportedly in contention to headline the studio’s reboot, now joins a cast that boasts Tom Holland in the title role as Peter Parker/Spidey, Marissa Tomei, Zendaya, The Dark Tower’s Michael Barbieri, Robert Downey Jr., Captain America: The First Avenger star Kenneth Choi and, after much deliberation, Michael Keaton.
The big question now is, who could Glover be playing? Long before Holland assumed the star role as Spider-Man speculation was rife that Marvel would shift gears and have Miles Morales don the famous suit. Of course, those rumors cooled soon after Holland clinched the part, but could Jon Watts’ 2017 reboot feature both Peter Parker and Morales, with Donald Glover inking a deal to play the part of the latter? It’s certainly an intriguing setup.
Behind the scenes, Spider-Man: Homecoming has drafted in John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein as the brains behind the script, who will hope to offer a new spin on the Peter Parker origins story in light of Sony’s two Spidey franchises.
Jon Watts’ spinoff movie is pegged for release on July 7, 2017. In news relating to Marvel’s friendly webcrawler, Insomniac Games is bringing Spider-Man to PlayStation 4 in 2017 as well – so it will definitely be a good year for fans of the iconic hero.
