Relativity Media announced yesterday that American screenwriter Alex Tse (Watchmen) will pen their cinematic reboot of The Crow. Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) will helm the film while actor Bradley Cooper (Limitless) is set to star.
In the film, which is a reboot of the 1994 cult hit of the same name and based on the comic book series by James O’Barr, Cooper will star as Eric Draven, a man who returns from the dead and becomes a vigilante to punish those who murdered his wife
The film has been in the planning stages for some time but ran into trouble when Relativity became involved in a lawsuit with the Weinstein Company (who distributed the original 1994 film) who claimed they owned worldwide rights to the film. However, last week the courts sided with Relativity in the matter and, with the legal entanglements behind them, the studio’s keen to begin production.
I have no strong feelings in this matter whatsoever. I thought Watchmen was a decent film and was a good adaptation of a somewhat complex source material. My concern is that the tone of the original film will be forgotten and that Cooper won’t be able to pull it off. That being said, I hope my concerns are baseless because I’d love to see The Crow on the big screen again!
