Arrow has been very hit and miss when it comes to its season long big bads. The Dark Archer and Deathstroke were great, but Ra’s al Ghul and Damien Darhk ended up being major disappointments. For the show’s fifth year, The CW will introduce an entirely new character who has previously been compared to The Wire‘s Stringer Bell. Said character is named Tobias Church, and we now know that The Walking Dead alum Chad L. Coleman (who actually had a key role in the aforementioned HBO series) will take on the role.
It’s thought that the crime lord makes his presence felt in Star City in order to try and fill the void left by the defeat of Darhk and H.I.V.E. Not much beyond that is known as of right now, but a description for the Arrow villain which is doing the rounds claims that he’s “an imposing gangster looking to unite the various criminal enterprises in Star City under his own singular command.”
That plan sounds a little different to what we’ve previously seen in Arrow, but it ultimately boils down to the exact same thing the show has been doing for the past four years; a villain wants to take over Star City and the Green Arrow will have to stop him.
If we’re lucky, season five will find some sort of inventive way to shake up this story, especially as many Arrow fans have started souring on the series somewhat, and rightfully so.
