A new Ninja Gaiden game is potentially on the horizon, according to comments made by series composer Keiji Yamagishi on Twitter. In the Tweet, he said that “I’m pleased to announce that I’m working on a new project related to Ninja Gaiden. I’ll be able to share more news in July!”

While not making any specific mention of the new project being a video game, we’d be surprised if it turned out to be anything else, considering Yamagishi’s past involvement with the series and the relatively long period of time that’s passed since the last game was released.

Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, which landed on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in 2014, was a spinoff rather than a direct sequel to Ninja Gaiden 3, although both titles received mixed to negative receptions upon release. The two original adventures in the modern series featuring Ryu Hayabusa however, are generally considered to be two of the best in the hack and slash genre. Especially the first, which has a reputation for being extremely difficult.

However, if we’re to be getting a Ninja Gaiden 4 announcement soon, don’t expect Team Ninja to be in charge of development – they’re currently hard at work on PlayStation 4 exclusive Nioh, which is due to release later this year.
