If there was one takeaway from New Regency’s debut trailer for Assassin’s Creed, it’s that Kanye West hit “I Am A God” doesn’t necessarily have much of an effect when paired with a movie that’s largely set during the Spanish Inquisition.
Thankfully, that’s a misstep that has been rectified with the release of the film’s international trailer, which is essentially a truncated version of what we’ve seen before only with a dubbed soundtrack.
For the uninitiated, Ubisoft and New Regency’s feature film will see Michael Fassbender take point as Callum Lynch, a nobody that is quietly executed by the deceitful Abstergo Industries. But don’t fret; our hero is quickly brought back to life so that he can experiment with the Animus, a bleeding-edge piece of technology that allows one test subject to experience the lives led by their respective ancestors.
In Fassbender’s instance, that’s a family tree that traces all the way back to 15th century Spain and the Spanish Inquisition, where he will encounter the formative Templar organization pulling the strings from the shadows. Flanked by Marion Cotillard, Assassin’s Creed also makes room for Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Michael Kenneth Williams, Ariane Labed, and Callum Turner. Meanwhile, Snowtown and Macbeth helmer Justin Kurzel is the one orchestrating the historical action from behind the lens.
Expect Assassin’s Creed to swoop into theaters on December 21.
