After emerging as one of the undisputed highlights of The LEGO Movie with his brash and wonderfully vain attitude, Will Arnett’s Caped Crusader is being readied for his own spinoff movie in the form of The LEGO Batman Movie.
It’s expected to swoop into theaters in early 2017 and, according to producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, will be packed to the rafters with all kinds of content designed for Batman aficionados.
Currently presiding over Disney and Lucasfilm’s Han Solo Anthology film, Lord and Miller are poised to pass the buck (brick?) to Chris McKay, who is not only well versed in the LEGO franchise after holding the role of animation co-director on Warner’s 2014 sleeper hit, but also possess a deep understanding of the World’s Greatest Detective.
When quizzed about the offshoot by Collider, Miller stated that, “Chris McKay, the director of the movie, is a real Batman aficionado and knows really arcane stuff that was only in one issue of the comic book in 1972, and that sort of thing. It is just a 90-minute Easter egg.” Putting that archive of knowledge into practice, Phil Lord then noted that The LEGO Batman Movie “heavily honors the comics. So, it covers all the way through to Batman v Superman.”
The LEGO Batman Movie will make its bow on February 10, 2017, jump-starting a lineup of animated flicks at Warner Bros. that comprises LEGO Ninjago Movie on September 22, 2017, along with a direct sequel to The LEGO Movie on February 8, 2019.
