Kate Beckinsale’s triumphant return as Selene has been postponed, now that Screen Gems has opted to nudge Underworld: Blood Wars back three months and into 2017.

Once on course to scurry into theaters in time for October 14, 2016, the horror sequel (franchise revival?) has now been delayed until January 6, 2017.

Beckinsale is in line to return as the famed Vampire Death Dealer for the franchise’s fifth installment, rubbing shoulders with Divergent breakout Theo James as they navigate the historic battle between vampires and werewolves. Last time we saw the actress take point as the series’ badass lead she had reached the ripe old age of 632. That was Underworld: Awakening in 2012, though Screen Gems will surely be aiming for a more effective sequel in time for 2017.

This time around, it is Anna Foerster who will call the shots from behind the lens. Best known for helming episodes of Criminal Minds and Outlander, it’s really Foerster’s experience in the blockbuster space that makes her a fine candidate for the gig, after overseeing visual effects on Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow and White House Down.

Underworld: Blood Wars also boasts Trent Garrett, Tobias Menzies, Lara Pulver, Clementine Nicholson, Bradley James and Charles Dance in the cast department, while behind the scenes it is Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi, David Kern, Len Wiseman and Richard S. Wright that will produce.

In light of today’s postponement, Underworld: Blood Wars will now roar into theaters on January 6, 2017 – only three weeks before Screen Gems unleashes Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.
