Swedish actress Alicia Vikander will make her debut as Lara Croft when the long-awaited Tomb Raider movie arrives on March 16, 2018.

Currently simmering in pre-production at Warner Bros. and MGM, early reports had indicated both parties were aligning the live-action actioner for fall of next year; however, it seems Vikander’s stacked schedule has quietly pushed the video game tentpole into 2018. Considering how long Tomb Raider has teetered on the fringes of development, though, today’s announcement ought to be welcomed with open arms.

Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug (The Wave) will be the one calling the shots from behind the lens on Tomb Raider, with all signs currently pointing to an overhauled origins story that disregards the pair of Angelina Jolie-fronted movies.

First released all the way back in ’96, the Tomb Raider video game franchise is busy ringing in its 20th anniversary and to this day, Eidos’ action-adventure IP remains just as popular thanks to Crystal Dynamics’ rebooted series.

So, there you have it; Tomb Raider is now on course to land on March 16, 2018 when Alicia Vikander will step into the shoes of hardened explorer Lara Croft. Closer to home, the seemingly omnipresent Vikander has a host of movies to look forward to in this calendar year, kicking off with Universal’s Jason Bourne later this month before the actress caps off 2016 with a lead role in Derek Cianfrance’s adaptation of The Light Between Oceans.
