Kiefer Sutherland is ready to indulge in some wacky science once more.

Deadline reports that, pending a final confirmation between Sutherland and Sony, the actor has committed to starring in the studio’s long-rumored Flatliners remake. It’s a deal that came about after both parties sussed out schedules for both Sutherland’s ABC series Designated Survivor and Flatliners itself.

A redo of the cult 1990 original, Sutherland is linked to the role of a senior doctor, and will star alongside the fresh faces of Ellen Page, Rogue One star Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemens.

Almost three decades ago, the seasoned actor played the part of a medical student who, alongside Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon and William Baldwin, come together to discover what mysteries lie beyond death – a daring hypothesis that involves the students pushing themselves to their absolute limits to produce near-death experiences.

Unsurprisingly, such an ill-advised process results in crippling mental anguish, and in lending its dormant property a new lease of life, Sony has drafted in director Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Mr. Robot) to helm the redo with a script by Ben Ripley, best known for his work on Duncan Jones’ own mind-bending sci-fi, Source Code.

No word yet on when Flatliners will enter production at Sony, nor how Oplev’s modern-day rendition will tweak the original story. Nevertheless, you can share your thoughts on the sci-fi redo below.
