Currently doing the press rounds for Men and Chicken, it’s no surprise that Mads Mikkelsen has been fielding questions about his role in the upcoming Marvel film Doctor Strange. After all, as one of the first efforts from the studio that will really tackle the more cosmic side of the MCU, it’s understandable that there’s a lot of intrigue surrounding the Scott Derrickson-helmed movie.
While most of the plot and character details are being kept under wraps for the time being, as is often the case with Marvel films, Mikkelsen was able to spill a little about the darkness and humor in Doctor Strange while speaking with Digital Spy.
“You can’t bring [the humour] yourself, if it’s in the script you have to sort of lean into the script that’s already there. There is some. My character is not necessarily carrying too much of it but Doctor Strange is. There’s a certain darkness in the Doc and a sense of humour in there, absolutely.”
The actor was also able to talk a bit about the CGI work in the film, which he said didn’t interfere with him a whole lot.
“CGI is not a new thing for me, I’ve done it in a few movies, This one was not too bad, the CGI was not in direct interaction with me in my scenes, it was more like the backdrops, the landscapes would be slightly different sometimes, but I didn’t have to interact with it.”
Nothing too revealing there, but it’s at least comforting to hear that although Doctor Strange is heading in a very different direction than most other Marvel films, it will still have some of that light-heartedness and humor that we’re used to. It may be frustrating that we still don’t know a whole lot about what to expect, but with Comic-Con right around the corner now, I imagine that we’ll be learning more very soon.
Doctor Strange will make his long awaited debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe when he conjures up a spell in theatres on November 4th, 2016. Aside from Mikkelsen, the film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams and Chiwetel Ejiofor, among others.
