There are at least two truly great Indiana Jones films, and one that kind of grows on you the more times you see it. But let us admit something: Indiana Jones comes from a very special time and place, when George Lucas and Steven Spielberg were of a single mind, and Harrison Ford was a young, dashing fellow in a fedora. Once we get past our Chris Pratt passion – I understand, I really do, but he does not have to be in everything – we need to seriously consider if we want or need another Indiana Jones. If we do, we must also consider whether we really want Spielberg involved. Remember Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? Yeah? All right then.

According to ILM President Lynwen Brennan, Lucasfilm has some very interesting plans for the Indiana Jones franchise. Though she didn’t reveal any specifics, a comment she made this weekend at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2016 has led many to believe that a multi-platform universe is being created for the iconic character.

While talking about the future of the Star Wars franchise, and specifically how they’ve mapped out the story and timeline across multiple platforms, Brennan also mentioned how they’ve done the same for Indy:

Kiri [Hart] and her group have mapped out a story and timeline across multiple platforms many years in advance, many EXHAUSTING years in advance. … We have a great honor to have responsibility for, so we want to be really careful with that. Not only for Star Wars but with Indiana Jones, which we’re all really excited about as well.

Without any further details, it’s a bit hard to imagine how exactly a cinematic universe revolving around Indiana Jones could work. Obviously, a property like Star Wars is much more suited to something like this. As such, whatever’s being planned for Indy likely won’t be as exhaustive or large, but it’s still nice to know that the character is about to make a strong comeback and that the franchise is still being actively developed.

Plus, the fact that they’re going for a multi-platform approach could be cool, as it means we might be seeing Indy show up in video games, on television etc. Just imagine how fun a virtual reality based game could be if executed properly. Or a spinoff TV series focused on one of the franchise’s more popular supporting characters.

While it may not have as many possibilities as Star Wars, there’s still a lot that can be done with Indiana Jones and considering that he’s one of the most celebrated characters in cinema, we can’t wait to see what’s in store for the famous archaeologist.
