Naysayers be damned, the Ghostbusters franchise is “alive and well,” according to Sony’s president of worldwide distribution, who believes there is “no doubt” about Paul Feig’s fresh-faced ‘Busters reuniting in the near future for a full-blown sequel.

Word comes by way of The Wrap, revealing that although Ghostbusters fought off competition to earn a relatively respectful $46 million domestically, Sony’s Rory Bruer believes it’s all but certain that Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Kristen Wiig and even Chris Hemsworth will reprise their respective roles for a sophomore effort.

“The ‘Ghostbusters’ world is alive and well,” said Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution at the studio. “I expect ‘Ghostbusters’ to become an important brand and franchise. While nothing has been officially announced yet, there’s no doubt in my mind it will happen.”

Though it remains to be seen whether Sony will issue the green light on Ghostbusters 2, Bruer’s comments chime with that of Amy Pascal, who remains confident that fans will want “more and more” once the credits roll on Paul Feig’s female-fronted reboot.

On paper, Sony’s budding new franchise had enjoyed a strong start. As The Wrap points out, Ghostbusters enjoyed the most successful debut of any Feig-McCarthy collaboration, and is the highest-grossing live-action comedy in over a year, easily outpacing the $33.5 million haul of Ted 2.

China notwithstanding, Ghostbusters is now available in theaters across the globe. For more on the supernatural flick, you can have a gander at our review.
