Idris Elba being cast as Roland Deschain in The Dark Tower was a genius move by Sony Pictures, but so too was the decision to have Matthew McConaughey take on the role of The Man in Black. In the movie, he’ll be hunting down Jake Chambers because he wants to use the youngster’s powerful psychic abilities to break the beams of reality and bring down The Dark Tower.

However, everything the villain does is in the service of The Crimson King, an insane, god-like entity who will be resurrected to rule the chaos of these collapsed worlds if The Man in Black can successfully shatter the Tower. Today, Matthew McConaughey shared a new teaser image featuring that mysterious character’s sigul.

Talking recently about what exactly The Man in Black is up to in The Dark Tower, McConaughey indicated that his character may be more interested in his own plan than the Crimson King’s.

“Once I bring the Tower down, and take a seat next to the Crimson King, I’ve got my own plans from there as well.”

With the viral marketing campaign for The Dark Tower now kicking off, the movie looks set to have a huge presence at the San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, and it’s going to be very interesting to see whether or not the Stephen King adaptation is able to steal the show.

Directed by Nikolaj Arcel, The Dark Tower is currently set to be released on February 17th, 2017.
