Crystal Dynamics’ adorned video game reboot will serve as primary inspiration for Warner Bros.’ Tomb Raider adaptation, according to Alicia Vikander. Specifically, the 2013 release that reintroduced Lara Croft to the gaming scene with aplomb.

Word comes by way of Hitfix, where Vikander spoke at length about her role in the imminent Jason Bourne. Talk inevitably turned toward the Roar Uthaug (The Wave) video game movie, which is being aligned as an origins story that will seemingly draw heavily from Crystal’s console title.

Per Hitfix:

“They told me they were doing the film based on the reboot of the game from 2013. That is more of an origin story. You get into an emotional aspect of getting to know Lara hopefully in an in-depth way. So I hope that doing a film of the rebooted game will bring something new and fresh that’ll stand on its own two legs.”

How faithful Warner and Uthaug will be to the Tomb Raider of 2013 will ultimately be told in time, but we imagine that the creative pair will double down on the thematic elements more than anything else, chronicling Lara’s arc from budding archaeologist to an accomplished raider of tombs.

Similar to Ubisoft Motion Pictures’ big-screen take on Assassin’s Creed, Uthaug is adapting a long-running series that, in the right hands, could be spun out into a bona fide franchise.

Whether or not Tomb Raider takes flight with audiences will be revealed when the director’s high-profile reboot – one that bears no connection to the Angelina Jolie-fronted actioners – swings into theaters on March 16, 2018.
