Joss Whedon proved instrumental during the formative years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, helming both Avengers and its sequel Age of Ultron in the space of three years. How and ever, Whedon’s experience on the latter blockbuster was enough to drive him away from the MCU, citing studio red tape and the sheer weight of expectation that comes hand-in-hand with helming a Marvel tentpole.

But it appears Whedon could circle back to the realm of costumed heroes on one condition – if it involves Scarlett Johansson’s former S.H.I.E.L.D. operative, Black Widow.

Word comes by way of IGN, who quizzed the beloved filmmaker regarding the Marvel Cinematic Universe and, specifically, what it would take for Whedon to take the reins on a new superhero flick.

To begin, Whedon addressed that long-rumored Black Widow spinoff, and why he believes the character is befitting of her own feature film.

“I think that character really is very interesting and very earthbound, so it’s the kind of action that I got to do less of with somebody like Thor or The Vision. When you get into your ‘Superman’ territory it’s harder to maintain the gritty action that the Russo brothers do so brilliantly and she’s got that kind of thing and [you can] really do a spy thriller. Like really do a good, paranoid, ‘John le Carré on crack’ sort of thing. That would be really fun.”

Having teamed with Scarlett Johansson across both Avengers movies, the director later heaped praise on the actress, stating, “Scarlett Johansson is just delightful. She works really hard but she just spends most of her time cracking me up, so it would be a fun shoot.”

All signs currently point to a Black Widow movie becoming a reality, but do you think it’s time Natasha Romanoff headlined her own film? Let us know.
