The MTV Video Music Awards Nominations Still Skimp On Electronic

It's hard to imagine MTV holding the interest of anyone over the age of 16, but these days it doesn't even seem in touch enough for that. This year's MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) nominees have been announced, and for the most part the network seems intent on shoving the same artists down our throats that it did five years ago.

It’s hard to imagine MTV holding the interest of anyone over the age of 16, but these days they don’t even come across as being in touch enough for the younger demographic. This year’s MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) nominees have been announced, and for the most part the network seems intent on shoving the same artists down our throats that it did five years ago.

You can count the DJ/producers nominated for VMAs in 2016 on one hand: Calvin Harris, 99 Souls, Afrojack, Alesso and The Chainsmokers. Even Skrillex and SeeB’s names were left curiously absent from the nominations for Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” and Mike Posner’s “I Took A Pill In Ibiza,” respectively, even though the latter song marks Posner’s first relevant single since 2011.

As its growth has run parallel to the proliferation of streaming services, electronic music simply isn’t a cash crop for the “big four” record labels. Until that paradigm is thoroughly phased out, music fans can continue to expect industry leaders to push the likes of Beyoncé, Drake, Chris Brown and Coldplay (how is anyone still listening to Coldplay?).

The MTV Video Music Awards ceremony will take place on August 28th. You can look through the full list of categories and nominations below.
