Similar to the proposed Beetlejuice sequel, a follow-up to The Big Lebowski is a prospect that’s never too far from the conversation. It’s also something that The Dude himself, Jeff Bridges, has weighed in on before, even if the Coen brothers firmly believe that a sequel is merely pie in the sky.

But through time, talk of a sequel spun out in a different direction than many had expected, with John Turturro emerging as the chief candidate to take point on a Big Lebowski spinoff, one that would revolve around “pederast” bowler Jesus Quintana. Granted, that pitch hasn’t gained much traction in years gone by, although the concept of revisiting Joel and Ethan Coen’s ’98 cult classic is entirely off the table. Not yet.

Ahead of Hell or High Water releasing in theaters – David Mackenzie’s neo-Western thriller that sees him star opposite Chris Pine and Ben Foster – Variety spoke to Jeff Bridges about The Big Lebowski 2, and why he believes it’s nigh time that a little Lebowski take center stage in the long-rumored sequel.

“I’m hoping they make a little Lebowski [sequel] because it’s all set up…I impregnated Maude. As The Stranger says, ‘There’s a little Lebowski on the way,’ you know?”

Not much else was discussed at the time, but at the very least, Bridges seems open to the idea of a genuine continuation, one that he would perhaps hold a cameo role in.

In terms of Joel and Ethan Coen, the illustrious filmmaking siblings aren’t so sure, after recently shooting down rumors that The Big Lebowski sequel was ready to fire up production – rumors that can be traced back to Tara Reid. Said they: “Tara Reid likes to announce that just like [George] Clooney likes to announce ‘Hail, Caesar!,” Joel Coen said. “In this case, I don’t think we’ll oblige.”
