The Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon has been selected to host the 2017 Golden Globes awards ceremony, NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt announced today.

Set to air on January 8, nominations for the 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be announced about a month prior to the main event. Following up his hosting duties on 2010’s Primetime Emmy Awards, Fallon takes the reins from previous hosts such as Ricky Gervais and the dynamic duo of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

He faces a tall order, too, given that ratings for the ceremony have been on the wane since Fey and Poehler achieved a remarkable 10-year peak in 2014.

Here’s the official word from NBC:

“We’re thrilled to announce Jimmy as host of ‘The 74th Annual Golden Globes,’” said Robert Greenblatt. “This is the most spontaneous and uninhibited award show on television, and Jimmy’s playful, disarming comedic brilliance makes him the ideal host to enhance and elevate the sense of fun and irreverence that’s made the Golden Globes one of the premier events of the entire broadcast year.”

“Jimmy Fallon is an exceptionally talented and dynamic entertainer and we couldn’t be more excited that he’ll be hosting the 2017 Golden Globes,” said Lorenzo Soria, President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. “His charm, wit and incredible spontaneity will play exceedingly well both to everyone at the show as well as the millions watching at home from around the world.”

Expect the 2017 Golden Globes ceremony to take place on January 8. Nominations will be unveiled in mid-December.
