Potterheads, meet Credence Barebone. He’s a “shy, vulnerable” character, someone who has experienced a rough upbringing, and one that will be portrayed by Ezra Miller in this year’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
On the heels of Zoe Kravitz’s last-minute casting, Entertainment Weekly has today premiered our first look at Miller’s tepid Credence in action alongside Colin Farrell’s Percival Graves, who has a vested interest in Credence for reasons unknown. Then again, considering Farrell’s auror is Director of Magical Security in the American wizarding government, we gather it’s a rather pressing matter.
In profiling the Fantastic Beasts character, EW revealed that Credence Barebone “appears withdrawn, extremely shy and far more vulnerable than his two sisters. Credence is defenseless against the abuse that comes in response to the slightest infraction of Mary Lou’s strict rules. But his loneliness also makes him susceptible to the manipulation of Percival Graves (Colin Farrell), who has taken a personal interest in Credence.”
Adopted son to Samantha Morton’s nasty mother, Miller revealed the level of secrecy currently surrounding Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them knows no bounds, though we do understand he’ll be defying the New Salem Philanthropic Society – a modern witch hunt designed to identity and kill any witches or wizards caught walking the streets of NYC.
“Everything’s like CIA-level. If I tell you sh– about my character, I swear there’s a sniper up on the roof that will take me out. They told me like two little bits of information about the character [when I auditioned] and I just went in and went crazy, and just talked as if I were this person, who I knew nothing about. But it was funny – there actually ended up being a lot of things like what I was imagining. But getting the role was a moment of absolute ecstatic joy and sort of transcendent sense of completion. I was doing some sort of slightly epileptic dance in the street of New York City, dropping to my knees, crying, praising the heavens, with people looking at me like I should be institutionalized.”
Also starring Eddie Redmayne, Gemma Chan, Carmen Ejogo, Jon Voight, Katherine Waterston and Ron Perlman, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hits theaters on November 18, 2016. Sequel plans are already in place, too, with David Yates and the gang reuniting for Fantastic Beasts 2 in 2018.
