Gotham Producers Say We May Have Already Met Harley Quinn

We recently heard that “proto-versions” of both Killer Croc and Harley Quinn will be coming to Gotham in the near future. Although there has often been much red tape separating the motion picture and television divisions at Warner Bros. when it comes to who can use which DC Comics characters, the situation has become a bit more liberal as of late. Case in point: Superman appearing on The CW’s Supergirl.

Gotham, however, has had a bit more leeway in that regard since its inception, seeing as how it’s a Batman prequel series. After all, how can you build such a rich mythos if you don’t have access to the vast wealth of the characters that comprise it? Proto-versions of folks like Killer Croc and Harley Quinn will be just that and should avoid confusion with their silver screen counterparts.

IGN recently caught up with executive producers John Stephens and Ken Woodruff, along with cast members Camren Bicondova (Selina Kyle/future Catwoman) and Maggie Geha (Ivy “Pamela” Pepper/Poison Ivy), to talk a bit about the show. With Harley Quinn experiencing such a pop culture explosion, it’s no surprise that her involvement in the series was discussed.

As opposed to Killer Croc, who is set to appear early in Season 3, Harley won’t come along until later in the season, according to Stephens:

“The Harley Quinn of it all is a bit more of a sticky wicket but it’s one we’ve already thought about for the character. We don’t want to give too much away but it will definitely be someone connected to the Joker cult world that we have set up. But it’s down the road, later in Season Three right now.”

Woodruff, however, decides to drop a bomb, saying we may have already met her:

“You may have already seen Harley as a person that you thought you had met and known for a long time. So we always reserve the right to sort of do that as well.”

A statement such as that will only fuel fan speculation that Barbara Kean will go on to become the Clown Princess of Crime. No matter how Harley arrives on the show, Geha hopes to interact with her, as she’s already aware of the character’s close connection to Poison Ivy.

“I would love, love, love, love to see Harley Quinn. In the comics she and Ivy and Harley Quinn are very close. In fact, I’m pretty sure in the comics they just formally announced that they’re girlfriends. Just as an actor I would love it for them to bring Harley Quinn onto the show. I would love that. I hope they do one day. That would be great. It would be so much fun for me.”

Gotham returns for its third season on Monday, September 19 on Fox.
