In fear of retreading old ground, Captain Marvel co-writer Nicole Perlman has conceded that the origin story of one Carol Danvers will undergo “a lot of reinvention” in time for the movie’s 2019 release date.

Word comes by way of the Any Time with Vin Forte podcast (via Omega Underground), where Perlman noted that Captain Marvel actually shares a similar origin story to that of Green Lantern, which will lead to some creative tinkering given that the Ryan Reynolds-fronted flop is still relatively fresh in the minds of moviegoers.

Come 2019, it will be Brie Larson (Room, Kong: Skull Island), who was last seen with her nose in the books, donning that iconic costume as the Marvel heroine. When quizzed about the pressures of crafting a compelling movie around Captain Marvel, Perlman replied as so:

“I don’t think I’ve ever had a project where I’ve been more mindful about the impact that it could have and the importance of it,” Perelman said. “She’s obviously such an incredibly kick-ass character and Kelly Sue DeConnick did a great run with her story arc [in recent comics in the last several years]. But here’s the thing: if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do.”

Further in the interview, the acclaimed screenwriter then touched base on those necessary revisions – revisions that will still ensure Captain Marvel is a “unique and fun” experience.

“There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen. And she’s also her own person and she’s a great character. We have to be aware of what’s happened in other Marvel films and make sure that her particular storyline is unique and fun and also fits in within this world that’s going on at the same time. It’s a little bit of an interesting story gauntlet. It’s been good to have a partner. It’s been an incredible experience. If we can pull it off, it could be an incredibly important but also really fun and kick-ass superhero film.”

Still no mention of a director to take the helm, but we’ll keep you updated as Captain Marvel progresses toward production. Brie Larson will light up the big screen as Carol Danvers on March 8, 2019.
