Kevin Feige Says Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Will Be ‘Very Different’

The Russos Explain Why Avengers 4 Isn’t Called Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2

Back when we first learned that the third Avengers movie would be a two-part event, sharing the Infinity War subtitle, it was widely assumed that the closing chapter in Marvel's Phase Three would be a sprawling blockbuster too ambitious to be contained in a single film. The Russo Brothers later teased that both of the movies' subtitles would change to reflect the story. Disney then announced a more drastic plan, confirming that the third movie is now called Avengers: Infinity War and the fourth Avengers is... well, untitled.

Back when we first learned that the third Avengers movie would be a two-part event, sharing the Infinity War subtitle, it was widely assumed that the closing chapter in Marvel’s Phase Three would be a sprawling blockbuster too ambitious to be contained in a single film. The Russo Brothers later teased that both of the movies’ subtitles would change to reflect the story. Disney then announced a more drastic plan, confirming that the third movie is now called Avengers: Infinity War and the fourth Avengers is… well, untitled.

“Why is that the case?” is the question fans have been wondering since then. Luckily, in a recent Cinema Blend interview the sibling filmmakers revealed the reason behind that major title shift.

Says Joe Russo:

“We wanted the movie to be very different and distinctive, you know. There’s certainly cross-pollination between characters and some story-arcs, but you know, the first movie is very clearly Avengers: Infinity War and, in time, we will reveal what the second film is.”

When pushed for more information, including when we might learn its true title, Anthony Russo chimed in with the following response:

“You’ll learn that, but not for quite some time.”

It might feel frustrating to have to wait for that title but it’s not necessarily a bad thing. There’s a strong possibility that the film’s name is in itself a huge spoiler, and may directly reveal information about the events of Avengers: Infinity War. We could be waiting until that film hits screens before any announcements are made about its follow-up.

While there’s a plan still in place to shoot both sequels at the same time, Anthony Russo affirmed several months ago that this shouldn’t be misinterpreted saying that the movies will be “very different from one another.” It’s safe to say that Marvel has something big in store for that fourth Avengers, no surprise given that studio head Kevin Feige promises it will completely change the MCU.

Avengers: Infinity War is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 4, 2018 with the fourth as-yet untitled Avengers film due a year later on May 3, 2019.
